Amla Navami 2025: Celebrating the Divine Amla Tree
Amla Navami Celebration
Amla Navami 2025: Known as Akshaya Navami, this festival is observed annually on the ninth day of the waxing moon in the month of Kartik. In 2025, it falls on Friday, October 31. It is believed that on this day, Lord Vishnu resides within the Amla tree, and sincere worship of this tree is said to lead to eternal virtue.
Ancient scriptures describe Amla as a divine fruit, revered in texts like the Padma Purana and Skanda Purana. According to tradition, Amla emerged from the tears of Lord Brahma and the nectar that spilled from the Amrit Kalash during the ocean's churning. From Kartik Navami until Kartik Purnima, Lord Vishnu is believed to dwell in the Amla tree, and those who worship it during this time are said to attain Vishnulok.
Legend has it that Goddess Lakshmi gained favor with Lord Vishnu and Shiva by honoring the Amla tree. Consequently, it is thought that worship on this day brings blessings from both deities. The significance of Amla worship is emphasized in various scriptures, where bathing, consuming, and donating Amla are believed to confer eternal virtue. The Charaka Samhita recounts how Maharishi Chyavana achieved rejuvenation through Amla consumption. Ayurveda also recognizes Amla for boosting immunity and promoting longevity.
Amla Navami is not only a day of worship but also a celebration of charity, prosperity, and environmental stewardship. Regular intake of Amla is said to improve health, beauty, and vitality. Devotees are encouraged to bathe in the morning, wear clean attire, and worship Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. Offerings may include yellow flowers, basil leaves, a lamp, incense, and naivedya. The mantra "Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevay" is recited, and devotees circumambulate the Amla tree while offering water. Worship is complemented with turmeric, roli, flowers, and a lamp, along with food and donations to the needy and Brahmins.
Mythological Background: According to legend, Goddess Lakshmi once inquired of Lord Vishnu, "Which tree embodies your presence and grants blessings through its worship?" Lord Vishnu responded that those who honor the Amla tree on the ninth day of Kartik would receive eternal rewards through her blessings, ensuring their virtues are preserved and granting them happiness, prosperity, and longevity. This belief has led to the tradition of worshipping the Amla tree on Kartik Shukla Navami.
The worship of the Amla tree is deeply rooted in scripture. It is said that bathing with Amla, consuming it, and donating it on this day grants eternal virtue. The Charaka Samhita highlights that Maharishi Chyavana received rejuvenation through regular Amla consumption. Ayurveda also emphasizes Amla's role in enhancing immunity and symbolizing longevity.
