US Secretary of State Hints at Progress in Iran Negotiations During India Visit
Diplomatic Developments in Iran
During his four-day trip to India, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Sunday that there have been advancements in the diplomatic discussions between the United States and Iran. He suggested that the negotiations might be nearing a significant breakthrough, hinting at the possibility of "good news" regarding a peace agreement with Iran later in the day. Rubio mentioned that developments could unfold in the next few hours and indicated that positive updates concerning the situation in the Strait of Hormuz might be forthcoming. Nevertheless, he emphasized that discussions are still ongoing. Addressing concerns about the Strait of Hormuz, Rubio referred to it as an international waterway that should remain accessible and not be dominated by any single nation. “Some progress has been made on the path to peace, I will leave it to the President,” he stated during his visit to India.

Reaffirming the US's longstanding stance on Iran's nuclear ambitions, Rubio insisted that Tehran must never be permitted to acquire nuclear weapons. “Iran can never possess nuclear weapons; they don't own it,” he asserted. Additionally, while addressing the media alongside India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar at a joint press conference in New Delhi, Rubio underscored the shared values between the two democracies, noting that democratic systems foster a natural alignment between India and the United States. He remarked that the strategic partnership between the two nations transcends traditional alliances. "The US and India aren't just allies; we are strategic allies, which is critically important. While we collaborate with various countries globally on numerous issues, our strategic partnership distinguishes this relationship as it extends beyond regional confines, offering opportunities for global cooperation in diverse areas," Rubio explained.
