Beijing, May 24: A devastating gas explosion in a coal mine located in Shanxi Province, northern China, has resulted in the deaths of 90 miners. Reports indicate that an extensive rescue operation is currently underway to locate those who are still missing. The incident occurred on Friday evening at the Liushenyu coal mine in Qinyuan county, where 247 workers were present underground at the time.
The confirmed death toll has reached 90, with approximately 123 individuals rescued and currently receiving medical attention in hospitals. Among them, two are reported to be in critical condition, while another two are in serious condition. State media has noted that nine miners are still unaccounted for as rescue teams continue their search efforts.
In response to the tragedy, President Xi Jinping has called for a thorough rescue operation and emphasized the importance of treating the injured. He has also mandated a detailed investigation into the incident's causes, insisting that accountability be enforced according to legal standards.
Xi has urged national authorities to learn from this disaster, enhance workplace safety measures, and take proactive steps to identify and mitigate potential hazards to avert future accidents.
As the country approaches its flood season, the President has stressed the need for improved emergency preparedness and robust flood control strategies to protect citizens' lives and property.
