New Customs Station at Samrang

Guwahati, December 7: A new Land Customs Station (LCS) is being established at Samrang in the Udalguri district, situated along the Indo-Bhutan border.

Today, Assam's Chief Secretary, Ravi Kota, met with Jigme Thinlye Namgyal, the Consul General of Bhutan in Guwahati, to discuss the new LCS.

Kota mentioned, “We evaluated various aspects concerning the operational setup of the LCS, emphasizing the need for suitable interim measures to ensure its effective functioning.”

Earlier this year, a committee was formed, consisting of representatives from all relevant agencies, to conduct a joint site inspection and identify feasible strategies to transform Samrang into a functional border point, thereby boosting import and export activities.

At present, there are two existing LCSs along the Assam-Bhutan border: Darranga in Baksa and Hatisar in Chirang.

In the fiscal year 2023-24, trade through the Darranga LCS reached ₹1,096 crore, with exports totaling ₹736.42 crore and imports at ₹359.61 crore. Meanwhile, trade through Hatisar amounted to ₹811 crore.
