Gulveer Singh Sets New National Record in Men's 5000m at Sound Running Track Fest

Indian distance runner Gulveer Singh has etched his name in history by establishing a new national record in the men's 5000m outdoor event. He secured a silver medal with a remarkable time of 13:03.93 at the Sound Running Track Fest held in Los Angeles, USA, as reported by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI).

Gulveer finished in second place, trailing behind New Mexico's Habtom Samuel, who clinched the gold with a time of 12:57.22. Australia's Jackson Sharp took home the bronze, clocking in at 13:05.22.
Record Details and Personal Bests
Gulveer's personal best remains at 12:59.77, achieved during an indoor event at the Boston University Terrier DMR Challenge in 2025. His latest time of 13:03.93 marks a new national record for outdoor competitions.
He notably improved his previous national record by nearly eight seconds, which was set at 13:11.82 in Japan in September 2024.
Half-Marathon Success
Earlier this year, the 27-year-old runner made headlines by finishing third in the New York City Half Marathon 2026 with a time of 59:42, becoming the first Indian to complete a half-marathon in under one hour.
The former record of 1:00:30 was held by steeplechase athlete Avinash Sable, set during the Delhi Half Marathon in 2020.
A Versatile Champion
Gulveer Singh is distinguished as the first Indian distance runner to hold multiple national records, spanning events from the 3,000m track to the 25km road race.
He is also an Asian Games medallist and holds records in both the men's 5,000m and 10,000m track events.
Future Aspirations
In addition to his recent successes, Gulveer excelled at the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships, winning both the 5,000m and 10,000m races.
He is optimistic about achieving podium finishes at the upcoming Glasgow Commonwealth Games in July and the Asian Games in September.
