The gathering took place near Freedom Corner on Newtownards Road, attracting around 200 participants, many of whom were young and donned face coverings, balaclavas, and scarves. This protest followed a serious stabbing incident in north Belfast, prompting calls for calm from political leaders and law enforcement.

Details of the Stabbing Incident

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) reported that a 30-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder following the attack on Monday night. The suspect, an asylum seeker from Sudan, faces additional charges for possessing a blade in public and making threats to kill. He is scheduled to appear in Belfast Magistrates' Court on Wednesday. The stabbing occurred around 10:30 PM local time outside a residential block in north Belfast, leaving the victim, a man in his 40s, with severe injuries to his face, eyes, and back. A kitchen knife was recovered at the scene. Social media footage showed a man assaulting another on the ground until bystanders intervened, including one individual identified as Maitiu Mag Tighearnan, who used a hurling stick to halt the attack.

Appeal for Calm from Authorities

Jon Boutcher, Chief Constable of Northern Ireland, urged the public to refrain from letting their anger over the incident lead to further unrest. He acknowledged the emotional turmoil caused by the stabbing but emphasized the importance of allowing the PSNI to conduct their investigation without interference. Boutcher revealed that the suspect had been granted permission to remain in the UK on September 28, 2023, and had traveled from Sudan to Paris before arriving in Dublin and then Belfast. He confirmed that there is currently no evidence linking the incident to terrorism, stating that the suspect was not known to the PSNI and had no presence on national security databases.

Protests Expand Beyond Belfast

The protests in Belfast were part of a broader wave of demonstrations sparked by the stabbing incident. In Southampton, protesters gathered outside a hotel housing asylum seekers, waving Union Flags and St George's flags. Signs displayed messages such as "Belfast-Southampton Stands With You" and "Illegal Migration Is Destroying Our Civilisation." While police have not confirmed any direct links between the protests and criminal activities, they are closely monitoring the situation due to concerns about potential disorder.
