In 2023, actress Sonam Kapoor and her husband, businessman Anand Ahuja, made headlines by purchasing a historic 200-year-old mansion in Notting Hill, London, for £21 million (approximately ₹270 crore). Recent reports from British media suggest that the couple has also acquired additional apartments nearby, which has led to discontent among their neighbors. Allegedly, they purchased five apartments in their building for £4 million (around ₹51 crore) to house their staff. Furthermore, they have bought garages in the same building, which are currently being used for storage instead of parking their vehicles.

Local Residents Oppose Sonam and Anand's Staff Housing Plans

According to the Daily Mail, residents of Hillcrest, where the couple has acquired the five apartments, are unhappy about the potential conversion of these spaces into staff accommodations. The garage, also purchased by a company representing the couple, may be utilized for their collection of vehicles. After moving to the area, Sonam and Anand undertook extensive renovations on their mansion, including the addition of a basement swimming pool and an underground basketball court. Initially, neighbors did not express concerns about these renovations, but now they are voicing their dissatisfaction regarding the couple's influence on the building, which consists of only 23 apartments.

Residents have expressed fears that if they raise complaints, the apartments might be designated for 'social housing'. Some neighbors noted that the apartments are currently vacant but are undergoing renovations. In addition to their London mansion, Sonam and Anand own properties in Delhi and Mumbai, along with a flat and studio in Notting Hill that was featured in an Architectural Digest video. However, a spokesperson for the couple clarified that Sonam was not involved in the purchase of the apartments, which were intended solely for investment.
