In 2023, Aamir Khan Productions officially announced Batwara 1947, featuring Sunny as the lead and Rajkumar Santoshi directing. Aamir expressed his excitement about the project in an Instagram note, stating, "I, and the entire team at AKP, are most excited and happy to announce our next, starring Sunny Deol, directed by Raj Kumar Santoshi, titled Lahore, 1947. We look forward to collaborating with the immensely talented Sunny, and one of my favourite directors, Raj Santoshi." How 'Batwara 1947' Title Was Chosen
As reported by Bollywood Hungama, the filmmakers aimed to retain 'Batwara' as the title. However, dropping '1947' would have required securing title rights from Salim Akhtar's family, who owned them. A source revealed that Aamir met with Akhtar's son Samid and wife Shama, explaining why 'Batwara' was a fitting title for the film. After considering his perspective, the family agreed to sell the rights for a specified amount. Meanwhile, this film will compete with Emraan Hashmi's Awarapan 2 at the box office, directed by Nitin Kakkar and serving as a sequel to Hashmi's 2007 film Awarapan.
