Paresh Rawal Reflects on His Controversial 2017 Tweet About the Taj Mahal

Veteran Actor Stands Firm on His Views

Mumbai: Renowned actor Paresh Rawal, currently featured in the newly released film The Taj Story, has revisited his viral tweet from 2017 where he criticized those questioning the Taj Mahal's origins.

During a promotional event for his film at a luxury hotel, Rawal expressed that he still supports his tweet from eight years ago.

In 2017, he condemned assertions that the UNESCO World Heritage Site was not of Mughal architecture, stating, “Taj Mahal-Symbol of Love becomes the symbol of Hate!!! Stupid and unnecessary and sad and pathetic controversy.”

Interestingly, after eight years, Rawal is now part of The Taj Story, which attempts to present a revisionist perspective on the monument's history.

He clarified that his tweet was a reaction to media reports suggesting that the Taj Mahal was a Hindu monument.

Rawal remarked, “My tweet was a response to the newspaper reports of that time and everything that was being said. I oppose any hollow controversy that serves no purpose and only spreads negativity. This film does not delve into Hindu-Muslim controversies.”

He further explained, “Asking questions can label you as communal, while providing answers can make you a propagandist. We are discussing history here. The education board and historians have been consulted to understand why we have been misled. What I said in 2017 reflects a reality that still exists.”
