Idris Elba Sets the Record Straight on James Bond Rumors: What’s Next for the Star?
Idris Elba Addresses James Bond Speculation
Idris Elba, celebrated for his roles in 'Luther' and 'The Wire', has finally tackled the ongoing rumors about his possible casting as James Bond. The 53-year-old actor clarified that he has never been a serious candidate for the legendary role, despite the continuous speculation over the years. Elba shared these insights during the Los Angeles premiere of his latest film, 'Masters of the Universe', while speaking with PEOPLE about the future of the 007 franchise.
When questioned about his name being associated with the next Bond reboot, Elba stated, "My name's not getting thrown out, no way. They're going younger. And I wish them all the luck in the world. I can't wait; it's going to be amazing." He reiterated that he has never been in contention for the role, saying, "I'm honestly not in the race ever. I wasn't in the race in the first place."
This isn't the first occasion Elba has addressed the Bond rumors. During a 2023 guest appearance on the 'Smartless' podcast, he shared his mixed feelings regarding the speculation. While he appreciated the compliment of being considered for such a prestigious role, he also mentioned that the experience was marred by negative reactions. "Being asked to be James Bond was like, 'Okay, you've sort of reached the pinnacle,'" he noted, adding that the backlash surrounding the idea was "disgusting and off-putting" as it devolved into discussions about race.
Elba's name first emerged in the Bond conversation after a leaked email in 2014 from a film executive suggested he should be the next 007. The role was last played by Daniel Craig in 2021's 'No Time To Die', following a legacy of actors like Sean Connery and Pierce Brosnan. As the search for the next Bond continues, no official casting announcements have been made yet.
With the Bond role off the table, Elba is now concentrating on his new project, 'Masters of the Universe', where he portrays Duncan, a vital ally to the hero He-Man. At the film's premiere, he expressed his nostalgic connection to the franchise, stating, "'Masters of the Universe' was my thing." He conveyed his excitement about bringing Duncan to life in a way that resonates with his own identity, while also discussing the physical demands of the role, which required him to stay in peak condition for the action scenes.
