Somali Referee Denied Entry to USA for 2026 FIFA World Cup
Omar Abdulkadir Artan's Disturbing Experience
Omar Abdulkadir Artan has shared a troubling account of being barred from entering the United States for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will also take place in Mexico and Canada. The tournament is set to kick off on June 11, but it has already sparked controversies, particularly surrounding the USA's immigration policies. Artan, a referee from Somalia, was selected by FIFA as one of the 52 officials for this prestigious event. This would have marked his debut at a World Cup, following his recognition as Africa's Best Referee by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) last year. Additionally, he would have made history as the first Somali referee to officiate a FIFA World Cup match.
In a conversation with a sports publication, Artan expressed his disappointment, stating that he possessed all necessary documentation and accused U.S. officials of bias against Somalia. He remarked, "I am very, very disappointed. I’m just simply a referee who’s trying to live my dream, the biggest dream of my life, to come to the World Cup. I had the right papers and everything. I had the right visa. I think that they have a problem with my country." During his ordeal, Artan was reportedly interrogated for 11 hours at Miami International Airport before being placed in a holding cell for several hours and subsequently deported to Istanbul without any explanation.
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection issued a statement indicating that Artan underwent additional inspection, a standard procedure when officers need to verify information or assess admissibility. The statement noted that he was deemed inadmissible due to vetting concerns. Artan also mentioned that he faced inquiries regarding political situations in Somalia, including questions about the militant group Al Shabab. FIFA, on its part, stated that it cannot intervene in the immigration policies of host nations, asserting that it had been informed that Artan's status would not change at this time. Furthermore, FIFA has not permitted Artan to officiate matches in Mexico and Canada, despite reports indicating that the organization has established a base for referees in Florida, where all match officials are required to stay for training and security purposes.
