Revitalizing Kolkata's Clubs: The Rise of Pickleball
The Evolution of Kolkata's Sporting Clubs
Kolkata's clubs have historically served as more than just venues for sports; they have been vital social hubs where friendships are nurtured, rivalries thrive, and communities unite through athletic pursuits. However, with changing lifestyles and the emergence of new leisure activities, many of these clubs are grappling with the challenge of maintaining their relevance. Arup Mullick, the founder and director of the West Bengal Pickleball Association (WBPA), suggests that pickleball might be the solution to this dilemma. The sport's growing popularity in Kolkata is not only attracting new players but also fostering increased activity, memberships, and community involvement in some of the city's esteemed clubs.
Pickleball's Impact on Kolkata's Clubs
How Pickleball Brought New Energy To Kolkata's Clubs
Mullick highlights the Royal Calcutta Turf Club (RCTC) as a prime example of pickleball's revitalizing effect. "RCTC was among the first to adopt pickleball, and it truly reinvigorated the club. Membership requests surged, leading to the introduction of non-playing memberships specifically for pickleball enthusiasts. By mid-2024, RCTC experienced a significant influx of new members. Mornings, once dominated by horse-riding, now see players arriving as early as six to engage in pickleball. I witnessed this transformation firsthand," he shared.
This trend has expanded throughout Kolkata's club landscape. Clubs such as RCTC, Royal Calcutta Golf Club (RCGC), Saturday Club, Tollygunge Club, Calcutta Swimming Club, Calcutta Punjab Club, Hindusthan Club, South Club, Shyambazar Athletic Club, Bengal Rowing Club, Eastern Metropolitan Club, and DKS have either adopted pickleball or are in the process of incorporating it into their sporting schedules.
The Growing Popularity of Pickleball
A Growing Club Movement
According to Mullick, the momentum for pickleball has surged over the past two years. "Following RCTC, Calcutta Punjab Club was one of the next major clubs to embrace pickleball, enhancing their facilities with additional courts. This led to further adoption by Tollygunge Club, South Club, and others. Shyambazar Athletic Club has completed its courts and is gearing up for operations. Clubs are now forming their own pickleball communities and teams," he noted.
The development extends beyond just court construction. Events like the Saturday Club Carnival have featured pickleball, and Punjab Club has hosted tournaments. Hindusthan Club and Calcutta Swimming Club have also organized events, showcasing the growing recognition of pickleball as both a sport and a community activity.
The Cultural Fit of Pickleball in Kolkata
Why Pickleball Fits Kolkata So Naturally
Kolkata has a rich history in racket sports, producing numerous players in tennis, badminton, and table tennis. Mullick attributes this heritage to the sport's acceptance. "Kolkata's strong racket-sport culture has paved the way for pickleball's integration. We are witnessing a natural transition of players from tennis and other racket sports into pickleball, making it a perfect fit for our clubs," he explained.
A Community Sport Before Anything Else
Unlike many traditional sports, pickleball fosters interaction among players of various ages, genders, and backgrounds. "I believe pickleball cultivates a stronger community spirit than many conventional racket sports. The friendships formed are often deeper, as it is a family-oriented game. Couples, siblings, and friends can all play together, which is rare in many sports," Mullick stated.
He added, "Another unique aspect is the direct competition between men and women. We've seen women outperform male players and excel in tournaments, creating a distinct sporting culture compared to traditional sports."
Future Prospects for Pickleball in Kolkata
The Next Wave Could Come From Para And District Clubs
Mullick believes that the next phase of pickleball's growth may emerge from district and neighborhood clubs rather than the larger institutions. "Clubs like Chinsurah Club, Serampore Athletic Club, and Chandannagar Club, which have strong tennis and table tennis traditions, are well-positioned to introduce pickleball. Over time, we will see more players transitioning from tennis, table tennis, and badminton into pickleball," he remarked.
Public facilities can also play a significant role. "Properly maintained public courts can enhance participation, but awareness and accessibility of equipment are crucial. Many people are unaware of how to engage with pickleball, which has hindered utilization. As awareness grows, we can expect increased participation in public facilities," Mullick added.
Envisioning Kolkata's Sporting Future
What Could Kolkata Look Like Five Years From Now?
Mullick envisions that the impact of pickleball could extend well beyond club memberships. "If Kolkata fully embraces pickleball, we could see a healthier, more active population. The sport is highly cardio-intensive and encourages physical activity. Personally, I lost weight and improved my health through pickleball. In five years, I foresee a more vibrant and health-conscious sporting community in the city," he expressed.
Can Pickleball Become Part Of Kolkata's Identity?
While football and cricket dominate Kolkata's sports scene, Mullick believes pickleball is establishing its own niche. "I believe pickleball is on the path to becoming one of the country's leading sports. Its growth is unstoppable. Developing a sporting culture takes time, requiring generations of players to create success stories that inspire younger athletes. We already have players like the Jones sisters making their mark, with Amrita achieving national success and Vinay Sethia ranking among the top Asian players. These achievements will motivate the next generation, solidifying pickleball's place in Kolkata's sports landscape," he stated.
The Role of Clubs in Pickleball's Future
Why Clubs Matter To Pickleball's Future
Mullick believes that organized club competitions could be the key to pickleball's next growth phase. "For pickleball to thrive in Kolkata, we need regular inter-club competitions. Club-based leagues are vital as they foster loyalty, belonging, and identity among players. Competing for your club instills pride. I have personally experienced this, having won the PTA League three times representing South Club. The connection formed through club representation transcends individual success, making club culture essential for the growth of pickleball," he concluded.
As more clubs construct courts, host events, and form teams, pickleball's significance in Kolkata may evolve beyond mere sport, bridging the city's rich club traditions with a new generation seeking community and connection.
