Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi Support Shapoor Zadran During His Health Battle
Support for Shapoor Zadran
On Wednesday, Afghanistan cricket stars Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi took a break from their busy schedules to visit former national team bowler Shapoor Zadran, who is currently undergoing treatment in India for a serious health issue. The 38-year-old left-arm fast bowler has been receiving specialized medical care for several months in a Delhi-NCR hospital after being diagnosed with hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH).
Nabi shared his thoughts on social media after visiting Zadran, expressing his sorrow at seeing his strong and passionate teammate in such a vulnerable state. He wrote, "Today in Greater Noida, India, along with @rashidkhan_19, we met our dear brother Shapoor Jaan. It was truly heartbreaking to see him, who has always fought bravely on the cricket field, lying on a hospital bed."
The senior all-rounder also posted images of Zadran in the intensive care unit, expressing his hopes for a swift recovery. He prayed, "May Allah Almighty grant him complete and speedy recovery through His endless mercy and blessings, and may he soon return healthy, smiling and reunited with his beloved family, friends and supporters."
HLH is a serious condition that severely weakens the immune system, primarily affecting younger individuals. It leads to an excessive immune response that can cause hyperinflammation, damaging vital organs such as the liver, spleen, and lymph nodes. After initially responding well to treatment, Shapoor faced a relapse after 20 days and had to return to the hospital.
Shapoor Zadran, who played 44 ODIs and 36 T20Is for Afghanistan between 2009 and 2020, first began experiencing health issues in October 2025. Following medical advice, he traveled to India for further treatment. His brother, Ghamai Zadran, revealed that Rashid Khan and Afghanistan Cricket Board chairman Mirwais Ashraf facilitated Shapoor's expedited visa to India. Rashid reached out to his contacts in the franchise cricket world, while Ashraf connected with Jay Shah, the ICC chairman. Shapoor arrived in India on January 18 and was admitted to the hospital.
