Local Star Tanvi Patri Shines at the 37th National Sub-Junior Badminton Championship

The 37th National Sub-Junior Badminton Championship concluded in Bhubaneswar, where local athlete Tanvi Patri made headlines by winning both the Under-15 and Under-17 Girls’ Singles titles. Her impressive performances included a straight-sets victory in the U-15 final and a thrilling three-game match in the U-17 final. Additionally, Odisha's Swati Nayak and Nimisha Ojha secured the runners-up position in the U-15 Girls’ Doubles. The event celebrated local talent and awarded substantial prizes, highlighting the growing prominence of badminton in the region.
 

Championship Highlights


Bhubaneswar: The 37th National Sub-Junior Badminton Championship wrapped up at the Dalmia Bharat Gopichand Badminton Excellence Centre located in Kalinga Stadium Complex on Saturday. Local talent Tanvi Patri excelled in the girls’ events, securing an impressive double title.


On the final day, Tanvi triumphed in both the Under-15 and Under-17 Girls’ Singles categories, displaying remarkable skill and determination. In the U-15 Girls’ Singles final, she defeated Avani Vikram Govind from Telangana in straight sets, with scores of 21-9 and 21-13.


The U-17 Girls’ Singles final was an exhilarating contest, where Tanvi showcased her prowess by overcoming Diksha S R from Tamil Nadu in a nail-biting three-game match, finishing with scores of 20-22, 21-17, and 22-20.


Local Pair Achieves Runners-Up Status


Odisha also had a presence on the podium in the U-15 Girls’ Doubles, where the pair of Swati Nayak and Nimisha Ojha finished as runners-up. They faced defeat against the Maharashtra duo of Sarayu Ranjane and Soyara Shelar, with scores of 15-21 and 14-21.


In the U-15 Boys’ Singles, Pushkar from Karnataka claimed victory over Harshit Khatri from Delhi. Meanwhile, in the U-17 Boys’ Singles, top seed Jagsher Singh Khangura from Punjab emerged victorious against Biraj Sharma.


During the awards ceremony, Rajesh Prabhakar Patil, President of the Odisha State Badminton Association (OSBA), announced special prizes for the successful players from the home state. Tanvi Patri will receive Rs 5 Lakh, while Nimisha Ojha and Swati Nayak will each be awarded Rs 2.5 Lakh. The total prize pool for the championship was Rs 40 Lakh.


The closing ceremony was attended by distinguished guests, including Development Commissioner and Additional Chief Secretary Anu Garg, Sports and Youth Services Commissioner and Secretary Sachin Ramchandra Yadav, along with other prominent officials from OSBA and the Badminton Association of India.
