Archer Reflects on Performance

After leading his team to victory over the Mumbai Indians (MI), Rajasthan Royals (RR) bowler Jofra Archer acknowledged that this season hasn't been his finest. He shared insights on how coach Kumar Sangakkara advised him to abandon the strategy of using slower deliveries early in the tournament. Archer played a pivotal role in RR's playoff qualification, scoring a rapid 32 runs off just 15 balls and taking 3 wickets for 17 runs in 4 overs, contributing to a 30-run victory at Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.

Bowling Insights

In his post-match comments, Archer stated, "I don't believe this is my best year; I've performed better in the past. Each time I bowl, I aim for good areas. Some days, the results may not reflect that effort. I'm pleased we achieved the win when it mattered most. My focus is on placing the ball in the right spots, especially during the powerplay. If I concede a boundary on a good delivery, that's acceptable, but I strive to maintain accuracy."

Season Statistics

Currently, Archer ranks as the second-highest wicket-taker of the season, with 21 wickets from 14 matches, averaging 21.71 and maintaining an economy rate of 8.76, with his best figures being 3/17. In T20 matches this year, he shares the third-highest wicket tally, having taken 34 wickets in 24 games at an average of 23.70 and an economy rate of 9.05.

Sangakkara's Strategy Shift

Discussing his bowling approach, Archer revealed that Sangakkara encouraged him to focus on pace rather than slower deliveries, despite the latter having a higher risk of being hit for boundaries. "After the initial two matches, I was attempting to bowl slower balls. The coach insisted, 'I don't want any more pace-off deliveries from you.' I'm now adhering to his guidance. Bowling with pace allows for a larger margin of error, even if it means occasionally dealing with edges. Generally, it's the safer choice," he explained.

Embracing the All-Rounder Role

On his batting performance, Archer humorously claimed, "I consider myself an all-rounder. Due to my role, I rarely get to bat. When the coach asked me to put on my pads, I was taken aback. I'm glad I could contribute. I truly see myself as an all-rounder and feel fit at the moment, thankfully."
