The 39-year-old was participating in a KSCA third division match for Sapphire CC when he began to feel unwell after bowling four overs. Despite immediate medical attention and being rushed to a nearby hospital, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Akshay was a key player in the Karnataka team that clinched the Ranji Trophy during the 2014–15 season.
