In a remarkable display of talent, the Indian women's cricket team secured the World Cup 2025 title by defeating South Africa, a feat celebrated by Rajeev Shukla, the Vice President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). He commended the team's outstanding performance against formidable opponents such as Australia and New Zealand.
Shukla expressed his confidence in the future of women's cricket in India, announcing a generous prize of Rs 51 crores for the victorious team. He stated, "This is undoubtedly the most significant achievement in the history of Indian women's cricket. Their performance has been exceptional, leaving the world in awe. They triumphed over strong teams like Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, showcasing their unparalleled skills. I am optimistic that Indian women's cricket will continue to achieve great things in the future."
With this victory, India now boasts three ODI World Cup titles across both men's and women's cricket. The men's team first claimed the trophy in 1983 under Kapil Dev's captaincy, followed by another win in 2011 with MS Dhoni at the helm. Now, the women's team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, has added a third title to this illustrious history.
Additionally, India has secured two T20 World Cup titles in 2007 and 2024, along with two ICC Champions Trophy titles in 2013 and 2025.
The final match held at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai saw India achieve a 52-run victory over South Africa. India set a formidable target of 298/7, thanks to Shafali Verma's explosive 87 runs off 78 balls and Deepti Sharma's steady 58 runs from 58 balls. In response, South Africa managed to score 246 runs in 45.3 overs, despite a valiant effort from their captain Laura Wolvaardt, who scored 101 runs off 98 balls.
