Emma Raducanu Exits Early from 2026 French Open After Defeat to Solana Sierra
Raducanu's Disappointing French Open Journey
Paris [France], May 24: Emma Raducanu from Britain faced another setback on clay as she was eliminated in the first round of the 2026 French Open. She lost to Argentina's Solana Sierra with a score of 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) at Roland Garros on Sunday.
The 23-year-old, participating in her third French Open main draw, struggled to find her rhythm against the assertive and composed Sierra. The Argentine player dominated the first set and maintained her composure during a tense tie-break in the second set, concluding the match in under two hours, as reported by a sports news outlet.
Currently the highest-ranked British female singles player, Raducanu is working to regain her form after a lengthy hiatus due to a post-viral illness. She had also faced an early exit in Strasbourg last week during her return to competitive play.
Raducanu began the match nervously, saving two break points in her opening game before Sierra capitalized on a third chance to seize early control. The world No. 68 from Argentina quickly asserted herself, confidently holding serve and breaking Raducanu multiple times to secure the first set in just 24 minutes without losing a game.
In the second set, Sierra continued her strong performance, breaking Raducanu twice to take a 4-1 lead. However, Raducanu began to recover, showcasing improved serving and baseline play to level the set at 5-5.
As the set progressed, both players exchanged breaks before Raducanu forced a tie-break. Yet, Sierra maintained her composure during the crucial moments, winning the tie-break 7-4.
Before the match, Raducanu had recognized the challenge Sierra posed, labeling the 21-year-old as a formidable opponent on clay. Sierra had also made waves on grass last season with an unexpected run to the fourth round at Wimbledon.
This defeat marks Raducanu's earliest exit at Roland Garros, having previously advanced to the second round in both 2022 and 2025.
Raducanu gained international fame in 2021 when she became the first qualifier ever to win a Grand Slam title at the US Open.
