Australia's ODI Streak Ends with Historic Loss to Bangladesh

In a shocking upset, the Australian cricket team lost to Bangladesh in the first ODI of a three-match series, ending a remarkable 20-year unbeaten streak in ODIs on Bangladeshi soil. This defeat marks a significant moment in cricket history, as Australia had never lost to Bangladesh in ODIs played in Bangladesh before. With a makeshift team led by Josh Inglis, Australia struggled against the hosts, who capitalized on the opportunity to secure a historic victory. As the series continues, Australia will be eager to bounce back and avoid further embarrassment.

Australia's Unprecedented Defeat

In a surprising turn of events, the Australian cricket team faced a significant defeat against Bangladesh in the first ODI of a three-match series on June 9. The match, held at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Dhaka, saw Australia lose by 86 runs via the D/L method, marking the end of a remarkable 20-year unbeaten streak against Bangladesh in ODIs on their home turf.

Fielding a makeshift squad led by Josh Inglis due to the absence of key players like captain Pat Cummins and vice-captain Mitchell Marsh, Australia continued to struggle in the ODI format, having recently lost a series to Pakistan 2-1.

Australia's Unique Record Lost

This defeat was particularly notable as it was the first time Australia lost an ODI match to Bangladesh on Bangladeshi soil. Previously, the two teams had clashed six times in Bangladesh since their first encounter in 2006, with Australia winning all six matches (three in 2006 and three in 2011) by a 3-0 margin in each bilateral series.

With this loss, Australia relinquished their unique status as the only team to have never lost an ODI to Bangladesh in Bangladesh. No other team has managed to play even one match against Bangladesh away from home without suffering a defeat.

Interestingly, apart from Ireland, South Africa is the only full member nation that has not lost a game against another Test-playing side, having won all 13 ODIs against Zimbabwe away from home. Australia, however, has only lost one ODI against Zimbabwe in their history in Zimbabwe.

Full Member Nations Teams To Lose 1 Or Less ODIs Against A Test-Playing Nation Away From Home

This marks only the second time Australia has been defeated by Bangladesh in ODIs, with the previous loss occurring 21 years ago during a tri-series match in Cardiff, where Mohammad Ashraful's century led Bangladesh to victory. Additionally, this is Australia's first ODI loss to any team in Bangladesh in 28 years, with their last defeat being against India in the 1998 ICC Knockout Cup.

As the series progresses, Australia will aim to avoid the embarrassment of losing an ODI series in Bangladesh for the first time.
