Australia's Ashes Squad Announcement

Australia has announced its team for the first Test of the Ashes 2025-26 series against England, set to commence on November 21. Notably, opener Sam Konstas has been left out, while Marnus Labuschagne makes a return to the squad. Jake Weatherald's selection has raised eyebrows as he joins the 15-player roster.

Chief selector George Bailey revealed the squad on Wednesday, highlighting the inclusion of pacers Scott Boland, Brendan Doggett, and Sean Abbott, who are in contention to play due to the absence of injured captain Pat Cummins.

"We are eager for the squad to come together and prepare in Perth, transitioning from a busy domestic and white-ball schedule to kick off the Test summer. The squad offers a good balance, and with 14 players participating in the next round of Sheffield Shield, we will continue to gather insights as we approach the first Test," Bailey stated.

Weatherald's Domestic Success Earns Him a Spot

Weatherald is expected to open the batting alongside Usman Khawaja in the first Test against England in Perth. This comes after 20-year-old Sam Konstas was omitted following five Test appearances and a series of low scores in domestic matches.

Last season, Weatherald was the top run-scorer in the Sheffield Shield and has maintained his impressive form in the current season, as noted by ICC.

Marnus Labuschagne, who has also performed well domestically, could step into the opening role, while Josh Inglis has been included as a batting option and backup for regular wicketkeeper Alex Carey.

Steve Smith to Captain the Team

With Cummins sidelined, former captain Steve Smith will take charge of the team. Travis Head, along with all-rounders Cameron Green and Beau Webster, is expected to be part of the top six, according to ICC.
