What’s Next for NEET-UG? Parliamentary Panel to Discuss Re-Examination Amid Controversy
Parliamentary Briefing on NEET-UG Re-Examination
In New Delhi, senior officials from the Health and Education ministries, along with representatives from the National Testing Agency (NTA) and the National Medical Commission (NMC), are set to address a parliamentary committee on Wednesday regarding the NEET-UG re-examination that took place on June 21.
The Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare has summoned the secretaries from both the Higher Education and Health departments, as well as key officials from the NTA and NMC, to discuss the recent NEET re-exam.
This marks the third time that these officials have appeared before a parliamentary panel concerning the NEET re-examination.
Previously, officials from the Union Health and Education ministries, along with NTA and NMC representatives, informed other Parliamentary Committees that their primary focus was on successfully conducting the June 21 NEET-UG re-test in a pen-and-paper format.
Additionally, CBI Director Praveen Sood has provided updates to a parliamentary panel regarding the investigation into the NEET-UG paper leak and the measures being taken to apprehend those responsible.
The officials were summoned following the cancellation of the NEET-UG exam held on May 3 due to allegations of a paper leak.
Tragically, some students have taken their own lives after the exam's cancellation, raising significant concerns within the student community regarding the re-examination process.
The Parliamentary Committee on Health, which oversees the operations of the Union Health ministry, will now interrogate officials about the examination's administration.
The committee will gather insights from the Secretary of the Department of Health and Family Welfare and the Secretary of the Department of Higher Education, along with senior officials from the NMC and NTA, focusing on the 'Conduct of NEET examinations under the NMC Act, 2019.'
This inquiry is part of a broader examination of the 'Organisational Structure, Mandate and Functional Proficiency of Regulatory Institutions pertaining to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.'
The Parliamentary Committee on Health is scheduled to convene on June 10 in the Parliament House Annexe.
Meanwhile, the Parliamentary Committee for Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports, led by Congress member Digvijaya Singh, has requested the NTA to clarify its definition of a 'paper leak' and whether any such incidents have occurred in exams conducted since 2018.
The committee's inquiries follow the NTA's previous assertions that no leaks originated from their system, claiming that only some questions from a guess paper were circulating.
The Digvijaya Singh-led panel is investigating the NEET paper leak situation and the controversy surrounding the CBSE on-screen marking system, having summoned top officials from both the NTA and CBSE.
The committee has also requested written responses from the Central Board of Secondary Education and the NTA regarding the OSM system and the NEET exam, respectively.
Furthermore, the panel has inquired whether the NTA has conducted any investigations into allegations of irregularities in the NEET-UG 2024 paper, aside from the ongoing CBI investigations.
