Strengthening Ties: Vikram Misri's Visit to London

London: Vikram Misri, the Foreign Secretary of India, has landed in London for his inaugural bilateral visit, aimed at enhancing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and the United Kingdom, while fostering collaboration in essential sectors.

The Indian High Commission in the UK shared a photo of Misri alongside India's High Commissioner to the UK, Vikram Doraiswami, on X, stating, "Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri arrives in London for his first bilateral visit, building on the momentum from the recent visits of the two Prime Ministers. His meetings will strengthen the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and advance cooperation across key areas."

On October 31, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar highlighted the transformation of India-UK relations from a complex historical background to a vibrant and forward-looking partnership, noting that the past year has been particularly significant for their modern relationship.

Jaishankar made these comments during a celebration hosted by the British High Commission in India to mark King Charles' birthday. This event followed a pivotal year in UK-India relations, which included the agreement on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), a shared vision for 2035, and reciprocal visits by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

"Over the years, our ties have evolved from a complicated historical association to a dynamic and forward-looking partnership. This past year has truly been exceptional for our modern relationship. Earlier this month, we welcomed Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Mumbai, accompanied by the largest-ever trade delegation from the UK," Jaishankar remarked.

Prime Minister Modi had visited the UK three months prior, during which he signed the historic Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement. Jaishankar accompanied Modi on this visit, where they also established Vision 2035 to guide their relationship across five key areas: Growth, Technology and Innovation, Defence and Security, Climate and Clean Energy, and Education. Additionally, they introduced a Defence Industrial Roadmap for the first time.

Earlier in October, Starmer visited India for two days, marking his first official trip since taking office, and engaged in extensive discussions with Prime Minister Modi to enhance bilateral ties.

Starmer's visit followed Modi's trip to the UK in July, where the two leaders met at Chequers, the UK Prime Minister's residence, for both private and delegation-level discussions.

Both leaders celebrated the signing of the historic India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), which elevated their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and significantly boosted bilateral trade, investment, and job creation in both nations.
