Trump's Controversial Appearance at the NBA Finals
During Game 3 of the NBA Finals, President Donald Trump was met with significant boos from parts of the audience at Madison Square Garden when he appeared on the arena's video screens while the national anthem was played. Footage shared on social media captured the crowd's reaction as Trump was shown on the jumbotron prior to the game between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs. The president attended the event as the Knicks aimed to maintain their 2-0 lead in the championship series.

Trump's presence at the game was significant as it marked a historic moment; he is believed to be the first sitting U.S. president to attend an NBA Finals game. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver remarked on Trump's long-standing association with the Knicks, stating, "Donald Trump, before he ever ran for office, he was a big Knicks fan. I was there at many Knicks games with him in the old days. He attended many of our drafts when they used to take place at Madison Square Garden."
The invitation for Trump to attend the Finals came from Knicks owner James Dolan. In a recent Oval Office briefing, Trump confirmed his acceptance of the invitation, saying, "The answer is yes — he's invited me, I'm going," and referred to himself as a "big fan" of both the Knicks and Dolan. He indicated plans to attend Game 3 and hinted at the possibility of being present for Game 4 as well.
Trump's attendance necessitated increased security measures around Madison Square Garden. Authorities established a secure perimeter extending approximately five blocks around the venue, implementing anti-scale fencing and vehicle mitigation barriers. This security operation also impacted transportation in the vicinity, restricting vehicle and pedestrian access around the arena, while entrances to Penn Station were temporarily closed to all except commuters with train tickets until Trump had entered the venue. This game was particularly notable as it marked the Knicks' first NBA Finals appearance at Madison Square Garden since 1999.
