Guwahati, June 9: The trial concerning the high-profile case of Zubeen Garg's death commenced today, with four witnesses from the prosecution providing their testimonies in a dedicated fast-track court.

The witnesses included advocate Ratul Bora, who was the first to file a police report at the Morigaon Police Station following Garg's unexplained death. The defense attorneys also conducted cross-examinations of these witnesses during the session.

Other witnesses included Hemanta Kumar Das, the former Superintendent of Police in Morigaon, Inspector Bhaskar Barman, and Pranab Saikia, the former officer-in-charge of the police station.

In a related development, the fast-track court denied bail requests from four defendants: Amritprava Mahanta, Sandipan Garg, Paresh Baishya, and Nandeswar Borah.

Special Public Prosecutor Ziaur Kamar informed the media that to expedite the trial, only select witnesses would be called to testify in the upcoming sessions based on their relevance to the case.

He also mentioned that five additional witnesses are scheduled to be examined on Tuesday.

This trial follows the fast-track court's decision on May 26 to frame charges against all seven defendants after determining there was enough evidence to proceed.

The accused individuals—Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddharth Sharma, Sandipan Garg, Shekharjyoti Goswami, Amritprava Mahanta, Nandeswar Bora, and Paresh Baishya—have all pleaded not guilty and are prepared to contest the charges.

According to Special Public Prosecutor Ziaur Kamar, the charges were established based on the chargesheet submitted by the Assam Police, which lists nearly 394 potential witnesses, although not all will be called to testify starting June 8.

Earlier this month, the Gauhati High Court postponed the bail request of Siddharth Sharma, a former personal manager of Zubeen Garg and a significant suspect in the case, as the matter was not scheduled for the appropriate bench.

Sharma had sought relief from the High Court after a fast-track court denied his bail application, citing the serious nature of the allegations and the ongoing investigation.
