Karachi, May 24: A devastating explosion occurred on a shuttle train in Balochistan, Pakistan, resulting in at least 20 fatalities and numerous injuries on Sunday.

The train was en route from Quetta Cantonment to the city’s railway station when it was targeted near Chaman Phatak, as reported by the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan.

The banned group, Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), has taken responsibility for the attack, claiming it was aimed at military personnel traveling on the train.

Official reports confirm 14 deaths, including three Frontier Corps members, but local authorities fear the number could rise.

While some media outlets have reported higher casualty figures, police officials maintain that 20 individuals are presumed dead.

Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi noted that civilian passengers were also aboard the shuttle, with the explosion affecting the engine and three coaches.

The blast's intensity shattered the windshields of nearby vehicles and windows of surrounding buildings.

Many passengers were reportedly trying to catch connecting trains for the upcoming Eid festival.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack, asserting that such acts of terrorism will not diminish the resolve of the Pakistani people.

He emphasized the government's commitment to eradicating terrorism in all its forms.

In response to the explosion, railway authorities halted the Peshawar-bound Jaffar Express at Quetta Railway Station as a precaution.

Babar Yousafzai, spokesperson for the home ministry, announced that all relevant agencies are on high alert and urged the public to avoid the blast site to facilitate rescue operations.

The region has experienced similar incidents in recent years, including a suicide bombing at Quetta Cantt Railway Station in November 2024 that resulted in 32 deaths.
