Strengthening Indo-Japan Relations for a Stable Indo-Pacific
Enhancing Strategic Ties
New Delhi, Nov 5: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the strengthening ties between India and Japan, stating that their partnership plays a crucial role in promoting strategic stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
During his address at the 8th India-Japan Indo-Pacific Forum, he remarked, "The depth of our partnership has increased significantly over the past few decades, making it more valuable than ever. It not only enhances strategic stability in the Indo-Pacific but also contributes to global economic stability. While maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific is essential, it also presents complex challenges. Our bilateral relationship is evolving in response to the shifting global landscape, evident in our expanding cooperation across various sectors."
Jaishankar acknowledged the efforts of the Delhi Policy Group and the Japan Institute of International Affairs for facilitating the dialogue.
He highlighted the recent discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, which underscore the importance both nations place on their collaboration.
"Prime Minister Modi's visit to Japan in August laid the groundwork for a shared vision for the upcoming decade. The eight priority areas and the ambitious investment goal of 10 trillion yen over the next ten years serve as benchmarks for our aspirations. The Joint Declaration on security cooperation is also significant in elevating our defense and security objectives," he noted.
"Looking forward, the India-Japan partnership should aim to harness our strengths, enhance supply chains, and invest in sectors such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, critical minerals, clean energy, and space. As two prominent democracies and maritime nations, India and Japan share a greater responsibility towards the Indo-Pacific. The Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative, with Japan co-leading the maritime trade, transport, and connectivity pillar, holds promise for advancing our contributions," he added.
Jaishankar also mentioned his recent meeting with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi at the East Asia Summit in Kuala Lumpur, where both parties agreed to conduct a more comprehensive review to further their partnership.
Reiterating the significance of the India-Japan alliance, he stated, "Both nations have consistently benefited from the insights provided by think tanks. I wish you all a fruitful discussion and eagerly await your ideas."
