Strengthening India-US Ties: Key Discussions Between Foreign Ministers
Joint Press Conference Highlights
In Delhi, India's External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a joint press conference. During this event, both leaders openly discussed the deepening strategic and global relations between India and the United States.
Important Conversations to Continue Over Lunch
Dr. Jaishankar opened the press conference by stating, "Secretary Rubio and I had our bilateral discussions this morning. In fact, we are still in the midst of our talks and will return to continue our discussions over lunch after this press conference. This is Secretary Rubio's first visit to India, but we have been in constant contact since the very first day he took office. I was among the first to meet him on that day. Since then, we have maintained ongoing conversations in various locations, including Washington D.C., New York, and France. This continuous engagement has allowed us to closely monitor the growing cooperation between our two nations."
In-Depth Discussions on Global and Regional Issues
Dr. Jaishankar elaborated that the political understanding between India and the U.S. is anchored in a robust strategic partnership, shaped by the convergence of national interests across multiple domains. He mentioned, "When Secretary Rubio met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday, they discussed several global and regional issues. Following that, in our meeting at the embassy, we talked about developments in West Asia, the Indian subcontinent, and East Asia. I also shared insights from my recent trip to the Caribbean. Today's lunch will focus on the latest developments in the Gulf region, as there have been significant changes overnight. Additionally, we will address the ongoing crisis in Ukraine."
Strategic Partnership Beyond Common Alliances
U.S. Secretary Marco Rubio emphasized India's significance as a crucial partner, stating, "It is an honor to be here with one of our most important strategic partners in the world. Clearly, we have relationships with many countries and collaborate with them, just as India does. We have various alliances where we work on specific issues or regions. However, a 'strategic partnership' is fundamentally different and much more significant than these common alliances. It signifies that the interests of two nations align completely, allowing them to work together strategically to resolve issues."
Shared Democratic Values as Our Strength
Rubio further praised the working relationship between India and the U.S., stating, "The list of issues we collaborate on with India, along with their depth and scope, demonstrates that India is an extremely important strategic partner for the United States and one of our most special partners globally. This relationship is rooted in our shared values. We are the two largest democracies in the world, which naturally aligns our interests, as our leaders are directly accountable to voters and the general public."
