New Weaving Service Center to Be Established in Meghalaya

Union Textile Minister Giriraj Singh has revealed plans for a new Weaving Service Center in Meghalaya, contingent on land provision by the state government. This initiative aims to support local weavers with design and technical assistance. Singh inaugurated the Integrated Textile and Tourism Center in Nongpoh, emphasizing the government's commitment to modernizing weaving technologies and promoting natural fibers. The center will also serve as a platform for training and product diversification, helping artisans access broader markets. With 52% of India's handloom production in the northeast, the upcoming meeting of textile ministers in Guwahati aims to further discuss regional textile agendas.
 

Establishment of Weaving Service Center in Meghalaya

The Union Textile Minister, Giriraj Singh, announced plans to set up a Weaving Service Center (WSC) in Meghalaya, contingent upon the state government providing land for the initiative. Currently, the only existing center in the northeastern region is located in Guwahati.


During the inauguration of the Integrated Textile and Tourism Center (ITTC) in Nongpoh, Ri Bhoi district, on Saturday, Singh also launched the 'Unity Meghalaya' initiative aimed at sharing knowledge and showcasing benefits within the textile sector. He emphasized that the proposed WSC will offer design, technical, and market support to weavers across the region.


Singh elaborated that the ITTC will serve as a comprehensive platform for training, design development, silk processing, product diversification, and textile tourism, aiding artisans in accessing both national and global opportunities.


The minister highlighted that the central government is implementing plans to modernize weaving technologies, strengthen handloom groups, and promote natural fibers on a global scale.


Referring to the northeastern region as the 'pride of India's textile heritage,' Singh reaffirmed the government's commitment to enhancing every aspect of the textile manufacturing process in the area. He also announced significant measures to increase farmers' income through the expansion of Muga silk production.


Central Minister Pabitra Margherita noted that 52% of India's handloom production is concentrated in the northeastern region. She revealed that all textile ministers will convene next month in Guwahati to discuss a textile agenda focused on the northeast. The event was attended by Textile and Foreign State Minister Pabitra Margherita, the state's Principal Secretary (Textiles) Frederick Kharkongor, and Meghalaya's Textile Minister Metbah Lyngdoh.
