Following the approval from President Droupadi Murmu, the Uttar Pradesh Factory (Amendment) Act has been enacted in the state. This legislation is expected to accelerate industrial development, enhance production capabilities, and create more job opportunities, as announced by the state government on Tuesday.

Extended Working Hours and Overtime Regulations

Under the new provisions, the state government is empowered to extend the maximum daily working hours in factories to 12, provided that the total weekly hours do not exceed 48. Additionally, the Act permits workers to work continuously for up to six hours without breaks, based on their written consent. Furthermore, in response to increased workloads, the government can now raise the quarterly overtime limit from 75 hours to 144 hours.

Night Shifts for Female Workers

A significant aspect of this amendment is the provision allowing women to work night shifts, contingent upon their written consent and adherence to all safety and health regulations. This initiative aims to promote gender equality in the workplace while ensuring a safe working environment for female employees. Workers who exceed standard daily hours will receive double their regular overtime pay, ensuring fair compensation for additional work and aligning with labor rights standards. The amendment seeks to enhance Uttar Pradesh's competitiveness in industrial development.

Government's Vision for Industrial Competitiveness

Atul Srivastava, the Chief Secretary of Labor, stated that these changes will enhance Uttar Pradesh's competitiveness in industrial growth. This amendment supports the state's ambition to strengthen its industrial capabilities and workforce productivity, aiming to achieve a $1 trillion economy.
