Netherlands Faces Blow as Defender Jurrien Timber Withdraws from FIFA World Cup
Timber's Injury Forces Withdrawal
The Dutch national football team has encountered a significant challenge ahead of the FIFA World Cup, with defender Jurrien Timber officially ruled out due to a groin injury, as confirmed by the Dutch football federation on Monday.
Timber, a 24-year-old full-back for Arsenal, last played as a substitute during Arsenal's UEFA Champions League final loss to Paris Saint-Germain. He will depart from the Dutch squad following their final warm-up match against Uzbekistan.
Official Statement on Timber's Condition
"The 24-year-old defender has not sufficiently recovered from his groin injury to participate in the World Cup in a medically responsible manner," stated the Netherlands' announcement. "After discussions with the medical team, it has been decided that Timber will leave the national team's pre-camp in New York after the match against Uzbekistan."
Geertruida Steps In as Replacement
In light of Timber's absence, Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman has called up Lutsharel Geertruida from Sunderland to fill the vacant spot in the squad.
"We had a feeling this decision was coming over the last few days. We met with Jurrien late last night and again this morning, and regrettably, we had to make this choice," Koeman shared with a Dutch broadcaster.
"With Jurrien in the lineup, we had eight defenders; without him, we only have seven, which is insufficient. Therefore, a decision had to be made. Geertruida was part of the squad until the match against Algeria, so integrating him back in won't be too challenging. We acted promptly as his condition wasn't expected to improve soon," Koeman added.
Koeman Comments on Timber's Fitness
Timber played approximately an hour in the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain, which included extra time, before the match concluded with penalties. However, Koeman refrained from placing blame on Arsenal for Timber's injury.
"You can't hold the club responsible, and I don't wish to either. It's evident that those minutes didn't aid his recovery," he remarked. "If he had only one more match to play soon, it might have been feasible. However, a major tournament was not realistic. He has been unfit for a while and continues to experience symptoms that are not healing quickly, meaning he won't be match-ready in the near future," concluded the Dutch coach.
Upcoming Matches for the Netherlands
The Netherlands will kick off their World Cup journey against Japan on June 14, followed by matches against Sweden and Tunisia in the group stage.
