A Dream Realized: Manav Suthar's Test Debut

Left-arm spinner Manav Suthar has described his Test debut for India as an incredibly emotional experience, fulfilling a long-held dream that he and his family have cherished since the start of his cricketing career.

Suthar made his first appearance in the one-off Test against Afghanistan held in New Chandigarh, where India triumphed by an innings and 300 runs, marking a remarkable beginning to his red-ball international journey. He achieved a six-wicket haul in the first innings and took one wicket in the second.

'A Dream Fulfilled': Suthar Reflects on His Debut

Recalling the moment he learned of his selection, Suthar shared that head coach Gautam Gambhir and the team captain delivered the news, making it a particularly memorable occasion. He emphasized that playing Test cricket has always been his ultimate aspiration since his early days in the sport.

He noted that red-ball cricket has been central to his ambitions throughout his development in age-group competitions and domestic tournaments like the Ranji Trophy, which he considers the 'pinnacle' of cricket.

Gratitude for Support and Motivation

Suthar expressed his appreciation for the encouragement he received from his teammates, especially highlighting the inspiring words of Kuldeep Yadav during the presentation of his debut Test cap, which added to the significance of the moment.

Reflecting on his journey, Suthar stated that from U-19 cricket to domestic levels, his focus has always been on earning a Test cap for India, a milestone he now regards as a defining moment in his career.

Transitioning from IPL to Test Cricket

Suthar discussed the swift transition from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 to Test cricket, emphasizing his preparation mindset and the necessity of consistent red-ball practice leading up to his international debut.

He mentioned, 'When my name was announced in the team, I was already practicing with the red ball during the IPL, contemplating how I would approach the opportunity. After arriving here, I had three or four extensive practice sessions. Bowling isn't just about the hours; if you enjoy it, you can bowl 20-25 overs without realizing it. The key is to keep bowling as much as possible.'

Record-Breaking Debut Performance

The 23-year-old all-rounder from Rajasthan achieved remarkable figures of 6 for 33 from 22 overs, becoming only the 10th Indian bowler and the seventh spinner to secure a five-wicket haul on Test debut. His outstanding performance earned him the Player of the Match title.

Suthar's match-defining spell placed him in the record books, with his figures ranking as the second-best by an Indian bowler on debut, following Narendra Hirwani's impressive 8 for 61 against the West Indies in 1988.

India vs Afghanistan: Match Overview

In the match, centuries from Rahul and Gill propelled Team India to a formidable total of 564/8 declared in the first innings. Exceptional bowling performances from spin all-rounders Suthar (6/33) and Washington Sundar (4/36) secured India's largest-ever Test victory by an innings margin.

However, since the match was not part of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, it will not affect India's standing, where they currently sit in sixth place.
