Ladakh LG Warns Activist Against Spreading Misleading Narratives

In a recent meeting, Ladakh's Lieutenant Governor Vinay Kumar Saxena cautioned climate activist Sonam Wangchuk against spreading misleading narratives that could harm public discourse. This discussion followed a constructive dialogue with the Ministry of Home Affairs. Saxena emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive atmosphere for political discussions and development initiatives in the region. Wangchuk acknowledged a previous mistake in comparing Ladakh's situation to that of Manipur. The LG also advised against protests that could negatively impact tourism, a crucial sector for Ladakh's economy. This meeting comes after Wangchuk's detention under the National Security Act was revoked earlier this year.

Significant Meeting with Climate Activist

On May 26, 2026, Vinay Kumar Saxena, the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, held an important meeting at the Raj Bhavan with renowned climate activist Sonam Wangchuk and his wife, Gitanjali Angmo. This discussion followed a recent 'constructive dialogue' with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). During this open conversation, the LG sternly cautioned Wangchuk against disseminating what he termed a 'misleading narrative' that could tarnish public discourse.

Emphasis on Positive Dialogue

Saxena emphasized the necessity of fostering a positive environment regarding both political discussions and ongoing development initiatives in Ladakh. He stated that maintaining such an atmosphere is crucial for the region's progress.

Warning Against Provocative Narratives

In a post on social media, Saxena mentioned, "In light of the constructive dialogue at the Ministry of Home Affairs, I had an open conversation with Mr. Sonam Wangchuk and Mrs. Gitanjali Angmo. We concurred on the importance of sustaining positivity in both development initiatives and political discussions." He further warned Wangchuk to refrain from creating provocative narratives that could disrupt public discourse, asserting that democratic expression should not equate to spreading fabricated lies.

Acknowledgment of Mistakes

Saxena noted that Wangchuk admitted it was a 'mistake' to compare the situation in Ladakh with that of Manipur. The LG added, "He acknowledged that drawing parallels between Ladakh and Manipur was a decision-making error. He also mentioned that he lacks concrete information about the origins of the 'Cockroach Party' and will study its founders' objectives, reconsidering his stance if necessary."

Advice Against Protests

Saxena advised Wangchuk against organizing rallies and protests amidst the 'positive progress' in discussions with the central government. He highlighted that frequent protests could negatively impact the tourism sector, which is vital for Ladakh's economy, despite the positive development initiatives launched by the central government.

Release from Detention

Earlier this year in March, the central government revoked Wangchuk's detention under the National Security Act (NSA). This decision came approximately six months after his arrest, which followed violent protests in Leh demanding statehood and inclusion of Ladakh in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

Recent Meetings on Constitutional Safeguards

On Friday, representatives from Ladakhi groups, including the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), met with a sub-committee from the Ministry of Home Affairs. The primary focus of this meeting was the long-standing demand for constitutional safeguards, democratic representation, and statehood for Ladakh.

Background of Wangchuk's Arrest

Wangchuk was detained on September 26, 2025, just two days after violent protests in Leh, which resulted in four fatalities and injuries to over 45 individuals, including 22 police officers. Following this unrest, authorities lifted the detention order, allowing the activist to be released.
