Karnataka Chief Minister Faces Internal Dissent Amid Cabinet Reshuffle
Challenges for Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar
The task of managing discontent within the Karnataka government is becoming increasingly difficult for Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar. Just as the rebellion led by senior leader Ramalinga Reddy was resolved, new signs of internal strife have emerged within the Karnataka administration. Two prominent leaders, dissatisfied with the distribution of portfolios in the cabinet, have unexpectedly traveled to Delhi to engage in discussions with the Congress high command. Among them is the newly appointed Bengaluru Development Minister, Krishna Byre Gowda, who has yet to formally assume his responsibilities despite being allocated a department. Alongside him, Congress MLA Rizwan Arshad has also arrived in the national capital, reportedly unhappy about not securing a cabinet position.
Krishna Byre Gowda Seeks Greater Control
Sources indicate that Krishna Byre Gowda is pressuring party leadership to bring both the Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA) and the Bengaluru Metropolitan Region Development Authority (BMRDA) under the Bengaluru Development portfolio. The minister believes that without control over these two agencies, the department will have limited authority, as they play a crucial role in planning and development in Bengaluru and its surrounding areas. Consequently, his visit to Delhi has sparked renewed discussions about whether the government might reconsider certain aspects of the portfolio distribution announced after the new cabinet was formed.
Rizwan Arshad Also in Delhi
Amid the political activity in the national capital, it is reported that Congress MLA Rizwan Arshad is lobbying for a position in the cabinet. These parallel efforts by party leaders have further reinforced the perception that many expectations remain unfulfilled despite the formation of the government, presenting a new challenge for Shivakumar in his attempts to stabilize his administration.
Reddy's Issue Resolved, But Questions Remain
These recent developments have surfaced less than a week after Shivakumar managed to resolve a potentially damaging confrontation with senior Congress leader Ramalinga Reddy. Reddy had resigned from the 'Major and Medium Irrigation' portfolio, alleging that assurances regarding the Bengaluru Development department were not honored. He publicly stated that he only wanted the Bengaluru Development portfolio, claiming he was promised this department before the cabinet was formed. However, the portfolio was ultimately assigned to Krishna Byre Gowda, leading to public controversy and marking the first significant test for Shivakumar's new government.
Late-Night Peace Talks
Following a lengthy meeting between Shivakumar and Reddy late at night, the crisis appeared to ease. After the discussions, Shivakumar told reporters, "Ramalinga Reddy is my friend. All issues have been resolved. Don't create false narratives. Those matters are now in the past. The resignation issue has been settled." Referring to it as a "family matter," the Chief Minister emphasized that all differences had been addressed. Reddy echoed this sentiment, stating, "I am saying exactly what he told you. Everything has been resolved. That's all."
Managing Expectations Remains a Challenge
Although the Reddy issue has been resolved, the ongoing visits of leaders to Delhi indicate that dissatisfaction regarding the portfolio allocations is far from over. Shivakumar, who took office promising a united and stable administration, now faces challenges that extend beyond merely quelling a rebellion. With demands for greater authority and aspirations for cabinet positions continuing to surface, the Congress leadership may need to intervene once again to balance the diverse interests within Karnataka's ruling structure.
