India and Dominica Collaborate on Community Development Initiatives

India has signed agreements with Dominica to implement five Quick Impact Projects aimed at enhancing community development in the Caribbean nation. With a financial commitment of USD 250,000, these initiatives include road rehabilitation and sports facility upgrades. The collaboration reflects India's ongoing support for Dominica, celebrating the country's 47th independence anniversary. This partnership builds on a history of friendly relations since 1981, with previous projects focusing on educational and community resilience. Strengthening Ties Through Development Projects


Roseau, Nov 4: India has entered into agreements with Dominica to implement five Quick Impact Projects (QIPs) designed to enhance community development in the Caribbean nation. The Indian government will allocate USD 250,000 to support these local initiatives as part of its development partnership program.


The signing ceremony took place in the capital, Roseau, between Pradeep Rajpurohit, the High Commissioner of India to Dominica, and Vince Henderson, Dominica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Business, Trade and Energy.


The projects encompass the rehabilitation of 235 meters of a farm access and feeder road in Macaton, Grand Bay; improvements to St. Elmo’s Road in St. Elmo’s Estate, Upper Giraudel; and upgrades to sections of a farm access road in Carholme. Furthermore, the initiatives include refurbishing the Grand Bay Basketball Court and constructing a footpath crossing at Fond St. Jean.


The High Commission of India in Trinidad and Tobago, which is also accredited to Dominica, expressed its commitment to providing developmental assistance to the people of Dominica, extending best wishes on the occasion of the country’s 47th independence anniversary.


India has maintained friendly bilateral relations with Dominica since diplomatic ties were established in 1981.


Numerous projects have been executed under development cooperation, including the India-United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) initiative for the 'Resilient Rehabilitation of Salisbury Educational Facility in Dominica Post-Hurricane Maria.' This project, funded with $1 million in 2018, aimed to restore two buildings at the Salisbury Educational Facility that were heavily impacted by Hurricane Maria in 2017, and it was completed in March 2020.


Additionally, a $1 million project under the India-UNDP Fund for 'Strengthening Sustainable Livelihoods and Resilience in the Kalinago Community' was initiated in February 2021 and concluded in January 2024. Another ongoing project, the second phase of the Community Resilience Project in the Kalinago Territory, was launched on December 19, 2024.
