Gurindervir Singh Sets New National Record in 100m Freestyle at Federation Cup

Punjab CM Congratulates Gurindervir Singh

Bhagwant Mann, the Chief Minister of Punjab, extended his congratulations to Indian sprinter Gurindervir Singh after he secured a gold medal in the 100-meter freestyle event at the Federation Cup held in Ranchi on Saturday.


Gurindervir made history by becoming the first Indian male athlete to finish the 100m race in under 10.10 seconds, achieving a remarkable national record time of 10.09 seconds.


CM Mann's Commendation

In a post on X, Mann commended Gurindervir for his outstanding performance at the Federation Cup 2026 and for establishing a new national benchmark. He expressed that this accomplishment has brought honor to both Punjab and India.


"Heartfelt congratulations to our talented athlete Gurindervir Singh for clinching the gold medal in the 100-meter freestyle at the Federation Cup in Ranchi. Our courageous young son has set a new national record with a time of 10.09 seconds. Gurindervir is now the first Indian to clock under 10.10 seconds in this event," he stated.


"By breaking a second national record within two days, this son of Punjab has elevated the state's status on both national and international platforms. The entire Punjab community takes pride in Gurindervir's remarkable achievement. Congratulations and best wishes for his future endeavors," added the Punjab CM.


Record-Breaking Race

At just 24 years old, Gurindervir improved the previous national record by 0.06 seconds, which was set only a day prior during the semifinals by Animesh Kujur, according to ESPN. Interestingly, Gurindervir had briefly held the record himself after clocking 10.17 seconds in the semifinals, only for Animesh to surpass it shortly after with a time of 10.15 seconds. However, Gurindervir decisively reclaimed the record on Saturday, with both athletes qualifying for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games to represent India in the men's 100m.


A Milestone for Indian Sprinting

In another remarkable achievement at the Federation Cup, Vishal Thennarasu Kayalvizhi became the first Indian man to break the 45-second barrier in the 400m, winning with a national record time of 44.98 seconds. This historic day for Indian sprinting was highlighted by Vishal's impressive run, which followed Gurindervir's stunning 10.09 seconds in the men's 100m, marking a memorable evening for Indian athletics in Ranchi.
