First Assamese Woman Conquers Mount Everest
Historic Achievement by Rupamoni Gorh
Rupamoni Gorh, hailing from Nagaon Pothar village in Lakhimpur district,
GUWAHATI, May 24: Rupamoni Gorh, a 26-year-old from Nagaon Pothar village in Lakhimpur district, has made history by becoming the first woman from Assam to reach the summit of Mount Everest, as confirmed by the Assam Mountaineering Association. She was part of an 11-member all-women team from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) that successfully reached the peak in the early hours of May 21.
The expedition was led by Deputy Commandant Bhanita Timungpi, a seasoned member of the Assam Mountaineering Association and a resident of Narikalbari in Guwahati. This remarkable journey was organized under the Nari Shakti Vandan programme by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
Rupamoni, who grew up in a farming family in Lilabari, has always had a passion for adventure. Her father, Joysing Gorh, is a farmer, while her mother, Kamalawati, works as an Anganwadi assistant. After graduating with a degree in arts, she joined the ITBP in 2020, continuing to pursue her love for mountaineering, as shared by her family.
Her achievement has garnered widespread admiration across the state, with many praising Rupamoni and Bhanita for their historic accomplishment, viewing it as a source of inspiration for young women.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed pride in Rupamoni's achievement, stating, “Assam’s daughter has reached the top of the world. Heartiest congratulations to Rupamoni Gorh for becoming the first woman from Assam to scale Mount Everest as part of the ITBP all-women expedition team.” He further emphasized that her accomplishment is a significant moment of pride for Assam and serves as an inspiration for the youth to aspire for greatness and achieve new heights.
