Guwahati, May 24: In a devastating incident early Sunday morning, four young men lost their lives, and another was critically injured following a head-on collision between two motorcycles on the Mirza–Palashbari road in Assam's Kamrup district.
The tragic event took place around 1 am, involving a Yamaha YZF-R15 and a Bajaj Pulsar N250. The collision was so severe that it resulted in injuries to all five riders, with three of them dying instantly.
The deceased have been identified as Jyoti Kalita from Mazirgaon, Chandan Jannah hailing from West Bengal, and Nikhil Das of Rangamati. The fourth victim, Arnab Bornam from Nalbari, succumbed to his injuries after being transported to GMCH.
Upon receiving reports of the accident, officers from the Palashbari Police Station quickly arrived at the scene. A police spokesperson stated, "We found two severely damaged motorcycles and five injured individuals upon our arrival."
All five riders were taken to the Palashbari Community Health Centre, where three were pronounced dead upon arrival. The other two were subsequently referred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for further treatment.
Arnab Bornam later died at GMCH, while the fifth rider, Dipankar Kalita, remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Local sources revealed that Arnab Bornam and Chandan Jannah were riding the R15, while Jyoti Kalita, Nikhil Das, and Dipankar Kalita were on the Pulsar N250. Family members mentioned that the trio on the Pulsar was returning home after attending a Bihu celebration in Rangamati when the accident occurred.
Jyoti Kalita was only 22 years old. His uncle expressed his shock upon receiving the news early in the morning, stating, "I learned about the accident around 4 am. They were returning from a Bihu event, and it’s heartbreaking to lose him at such a young age."
Witnesses described the crash as particularly violent, indicative of a high-speed collision on an open road during the night. A local resident remarked, "It was a head-on collision. One motorcycle had two riders, while the other had three." Authorities have confirmed that a thorough investigation into the incident is currently underway.
