Guwahati, June 9: A shocking murder case involving three individuals from Assam has emerged in Chennai, leading to the arrest of a man and a woman for allegedly killing the woman's spouse, dismembering his body, and disposing of the remains in various locations across Tamil Nadu.
The deceased, identified as 35-year-old Ameer Ali, was originally from Assam and was the second husband of the main suspect, Rhema Khatun (30).
Khatun and her accomplice, Asraf Ali (36), also from Assam, were taken into custody by the Greater Chennai Police after an investigation was initiated following the discovery of a headless torso inside a suitcase at Perambur railway station on June 5.
The investigation began when a passenger reported an unattended suitcase on Platform No. 4 of the station.
Upon inspection with Railway Protection Force personnel, authorities uncovered the headless body of a man wrapped in plastic and cloth, with severed hands and legs.
Initially classified as a suspicious death by the Perambur Railway Police, the case was later escalated to a murder investigation and transferred to the Greater Chennai Police.
Investigators noted that a significant breakthrough was achieved through forensic evidence found in the suitcase. Red and yellow plastic covers linked to a hospital in Chennai's Taramani area were crucial to the case.
Police reviewed footage from over 100 CCTV cameras and tracked a suspicious auto-rickshaw seen nearby.
By cross-referencing ride-hailing records from services like Rapido, Ola, and Uber, they identified the vehicle used to transport the suitcase, leading them to a residence in Chennai's Teynampet area, where the suspects were arrested.
During questioning, Khatun reportedly confessed to the murder, claiming that Ameer Ali had frequently abused her and engaged in extramarital affairs, which caused her significant emotional distress.
Authorities stated that Khatun and Asraf Ali allegedly plotted to kill Ameer Ali, executing the crime on June 2.
According to investigators, the pair mixed seven sleeping pills into the victim's milk, and after he lost consciousness, they slit his throat. They then dismembered the body using household knives.
The torso was packed into a suitcase and left at Perambur railway station on June 5, while the severed limbs were reportedly discarded into the Buckingham Canal near the suspects' home, and the head was disposed of in Kolavai Lake near Chengalpattu railway station the following day.
Based on the suspects' confessions, police recovered the severed limbs from the canal and retrieved the head from the lake with the assistance of revenue officials. The investigation remains ongoing.
