Controversy Erupts Over Marathi-Hindi Language Remarks by Shiv Sena MLA
Shiv Sena MLA Sparks Language Controversy
Prakash Surve, a legislator from the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), has ignited a controversy with his remarks regarding the Marathi-Hindi language debate. He stated that Marathi is akin to his mother, while Hindi is like his aunt. Surve remarked that while it may be acceptable for a mother to pass away, an aunt should not. Speaking at an event organized by members of the North Indian community, he attempted to praise non-Marathi voters by translating a Marathi proverb, but his choice of words led to backlash.
Opposition and Marathi Organizations Respond
His comments faced sharp criticism from opposition parties and Marathi organizations, prompting Surve to issue an apology on Monday. He explained, "Marathi is my mother, but North India is my aunt. It is acceptable for a mother to die once, but an aunt should not. Because an aunt loves us more. I have received more love from you (North Indians) than from my mother."
Attempts to Calm the Situation
As his statement gained traction on social media and protests erupted in various parts of the city, Surve sought to defuse the situation by apologizing. He joined his hands in front of reporters, stating, "Both Marathi and my aunt are dear to me. These words slipped out unintentionally. If my statement hurt anyone's feelings, I sincerely apologize."
Support from Maharashtra's Industry Minister
Uday Samant, Maharashtra's Industry Minister, defended the legislator, asserting, "These words were spoken in error, and he has apologized for them. However, some individuals are exploiting his statement for political gain. Under Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's leadership, we have continuously worked to uphold the dignity of Marathi, which has been granted classical status." The comments from Surve drew sharp reactions from the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT), Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), and the Marathi Ekikaran Samiti, leading to a protest march in Dahisar on Tuesday.
Political Tensions Rise in Maharashtra
This controversy has intensified the ongoing Marathi versus Hindi debate in Maharashtra, which was already sparked by the government's decision to make Hindi a mandatory subject in schools. As the Mumbai Municipal Corporation elections approach, tensions remain high as political leaders seek to capitalize on linguistic sentiments.
