Legal Action Against Former West Bengal Chief Minister

A complaint has been lodged against Mamata Banerjee, the former Chief Minister of West Bengal, for allegedly hurting religious sentiments. This information was confirmed by the police. The complaint was filed on May 20 by advocate Rinki Chattopadhyay Singh at the Siliguri Cyber Crime Police Station. According to the complainant, Banerjee made two controversial remarks—one during a religious event in 2025 and another during a protest in Dharmatala prior to the assembly elections—which purportedly offended the beliefs and feelings of millions of Sanatani Hindus in India and around the world.

Allegations of Unconstitutional Remarks

The police reported that the lawyer also claimed these statements were unconstitutional and inflammatory in nature. Singh further alleged that Banerjee suggested that a particular community could eliminate other communities within five minutes if they wished. Such comments are deemed inappropriate from someone in a constitutional position. Singh asserted that the police initially refused to register the complaint and only acted after repeated requests.

Details of the FIR

The FIR has been filed under various sections, including 351 (criminal intimidation), 352 (deliberate insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 353 (spreading false statements), 354 (threatening with divine displeasure), 356 (criminal defamation), and 299 (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings). A senior officer from the Siliguri Police Commissionerate confirmed that an investigation is underway. The officer stated that the complaint has been received and the case has been registered according to procedure, with all aspects mentioned in the FIR being examined.
