CID Team Visits Mamata Banerjee's Residence

A team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of West Bengal arrived at the residence of Mamata Banerjee, the leader of the Trinamool Congress and former Chief Minister, on Monday. Banerjee is currently in the capital after attending a meeting of the India Bloc yesterday. Last week, a CID team also visited the home of TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee in connection with alleged signature forgery. The state CID has established a five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the signature forgery involving TMC legislators. Officials have indicated that Abhishek Banerjee has been asked to present a copy of the original proposal sent to the Speaker of the West Bengal Assembly regarding the appointment of party officials.

Response from Abhishek Banerjee

According to sources within the Trinamool Congress (AITC), Abhishek Banerjee has formally responded to the agency through a letter sent via his legal advisor. Police sources revealed that a special investigation team (SIT) led by a Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the West Bengal Police has been formed to ensure a thorough investigation into the matter. The state CID has recorded statements from 13 TMC legislators as part of the inquiry into the alleged signature forgery. Officials noted that three legislators claimed their signatures were not present in the proposal booklet from the meeting held on May 6. One legislator from Canning Purba stated that he did not attend the meeting in Kolkata. Subsequently, the CID requested Abhishek Banerjee to appear before the investigating officer with the original proposal booklet from the meeting.

Details of the Legislative Meeting

On May 9, Abhishek Banerjee informed the Speaker that the party had made decisions regarding the appointment of officials during the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) legislative meeting. Following this, on May 18, the Principal Secretary of the West Bengal Assembly wrote to Abhishek Banerjee requesting the minutes of the meeting and the signatures of the legislators present during the decision-making process. On May 20, Banerjee submitted a copy of the proposal booklet from the meeting, along with an attendance sheet showing that 70 legislators were present at the May 6 meeting. However, on May 27, two AITC legislators filed a complaint with the Speaker, stating that no proposal regarding the selection of the opposition leader was passed on May 6, and they had only signed the proposal booklet on May 19.
