Health Risks Intensify Amidst Rising Temperatures
Impact of Extreme Heat on Health
Severe heat is escalating across various regions of the country. In response, medical professionals have cautioned that extended exposure to high temperatures can adversely affect not only overall health but also the functioning of the eyes and nervous system, especially in children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health issues. Experts indicate that increasing temperatures, dehydration, and prolonged sun exposure can disturb the body's internal balance.
Symptoms of Heat-Related Illnesses
This situation can lead to symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, severe headaches, migraines, heat exhaustion, and even neurological issues in susceptible individuals. Hospitals in the NCR region have reported a surge in patients experiencing heat-related conditions, including eye irritation, dehydration-induced headaches, and neurological symptoms triggered by heat.
Surge in Neurological Complaints
**20% Increase in Outpatient Visits**
Dr. Vineet Suri, a Senior Neurology Consultant at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals in Delhi, mentioned that the current heatwave is producing effects that differ from standard heat-related illnesses. There is a marked increase in neurological complaints among patients visiting the Outpatient Department (OPD). More individuals are reporting symptoms like severe headaches, dizziness, confusion, fainting, worsening of existing neurological conditions, and intensified migraines.
Dr. Suri elaborated that prolonged exposure to intense sunlight can trigger or exacerbate migraines in certain individuals. He noted that extreme heat and dehydration can hinder blood flow to the brain, disrupt electrolyte levels, and impose significant stress on the nervous system, particularly in vulnerable groups. Symptoms such as persistent confusion, difficulty in speech, irregular sleep patterns, seizures, or loss of consciousness should not be overlooked, as they may signal a serious neurological emergency that requires immediate medical intervention.
Precautions During Extreme Heat
Dr. Sushma Sharma, Director of Neurology at Marengo Asia Hospitals, advised that individuals with migraines, epilepsy, and other neurological disorders may see their symptoms worsen due to extreme heat, hot nights, and sleep disturbances caused by power outages. She stressed the importance of avoiding outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours whenever possible.
For those who must go outside, precautions such as using an umbrella, wearing sunglasses, and covering the head are essential. Staying hydrated is crucial during hot weather, as excessive sweating can lead to dehydration, which may cause confusion and neurological issues. She recommended consuming natural electrolyte-rich drinks like coconut water, buttermilk, and fresh fruit juices to replenish fluids lost through sweating. This season also increases the risk of eye irritation and infections.
Eye Health Concerns in Hot Weather
Increased Eye Discomfort
Dr. Neeraj Sandhuja, Director at the Viyan Eye and Retina Center, pointed out that exposure to sunlight, hot winds, dust, and dehydration often leads to eye strain and discomfort. The summer months can affect eye health in multiple ways. Prolonged exposure to intense sunlight, hot winds, and dust can cause eye dryness, irritation, redness, and strain. Many individuals report burning sensations, itching, or watery eyes during this season. Cases of dry eye syndrome, allergic conjunctivitis, and corneal sunburn are also prevalent.
