A Groundbreaking Initiative in Tamil Nadu

Chennai, Oct 26: Tamil Nadu is set to make history as the first Indian state to introduce a complimentary cancer vaccination program aimed at girls aged between one and fourteen, as announced by the state's Health and Family Welfare Minister, Ma. Subramanian, on Sunday.

During the 16th annual breast cancer awareness walkathon, named 'Oru Nadai Oru Nambikkai' (One Step, One Hope), held at Island Grounds in Chennai, the Minister revealed that the government has earmarked Rs 38 crore for this significant preventive health initiative.

"The tender process has been finalized. Once implemented, Tamil Nadu will be the first state in India to offer the cancer-preventive vaccine completely free of charge to girls in this age group," he stated, noting that this initiative could inspire similar programs nationwide.

He also highlighted the critical role of lifestyle choices and physical fitness in cancer prevention.

"Research indicates that individuals who engage in daily walking or running have a markedly reduced risk of developing cancer. Regular physical activity is among the most effective preventive strategies," he emphasized.

Subramanian also pointed out Chief Minister M. K. Stalin's dedication to public health and environmental issues, mentioning that the Chief Minister had inspected the Adyar estuary for the second consecutive day as part of the state's flood preparedness measures.

"I personally walked 13 kilometers this morning," he added, reinforcing the event's focus on fitness and awareness.

Additionally, the Minister disclosed that six districts in Tamil Nadu are on alert due to reports of a potential global resurgence of polio after two decades, with precautionary vaccination campaigns already in progress to maintain immunity and safeguard public health.

"Through these ongoing health initiatives, Tamil Nadu remains at the forefront of ensuring every citizen's right to a healthy life," Subramanian remarked.

The awareness event attracted over 500 participants, including actress Sanchita Shetty, cancer survivors, students, and volunteers. Attendees carried placards promoting early screening, fitness, and healthy living, further establishing Tamil Nadu's reputation as a leader in preventive public health.
