Chhath Puja 2025: Celebrating the Third Day with Sandhya Arghya
Chhath Puja Third Day Observance
Today Marks the Third Day of Chhath Puja: The third day of Chhath Puja is here, a time when devotees pay homage to the setting sun. This festival honors Chhathi Maiya and Suryadev, symbolizing the reverence for the sun, the source of life, light, and energy, alongside Chhathi Maiya, who embodies nature and motherhood.
Chhathi Maiya is revered as the sister of Goddess Katyayani, a manifestation of Goddess Parvati, and Suryadev. Consequently, this observance is also referred to as Surya-Shashthi or Chhathi Devi. On this day, known as Sandhya Arghya, devotees present water to the setting sun, a unique offering made only during Chhath Puja. This year, the Sandhya Arghya coincides with Ravi Yoga, enhancing its spiritual importance as it is dedicated to Suryadev. Let’s explore the proper way to offer arghya to the Sun on this significant day.
Importance of the Third Day of Chhath Puja
Significance of the Day:
On this third day, devotees offer arghya to the setting Sun, who is revered in Hinduism as a deity providing life, energy, and health. It is believed that during the evening, Lord Bhaskar is accompanied by his second wife, Pratyusha, the goddess of the evening. Mothers express their gratitude to the Sun and Pratyusha by offering arghya, thanking them for the light and energy received throughout the day. This offering symbolizes appreciation, and while doing so, mothers pray for their children's longevity and a life filled with joy, peace, and prosperity.
Recitation of Surya Kavach
Reciting the Surya Kavach:
On this day, the Surya Kavach is recited prior to offering arghya to the Sun. It is believed that chanting the Surya Kavach during Chhath Puja brings prosperity in health, career, wealth, and family. Regular recitation is said to alleviate ailments related to the eyes, skin, heart, and bones, while also boosting self-confidence and willpower.
Offering to the Setting Sun in Auspicious Yogas
Three Auspicious Yogas:
Today, offerings to the Setting Sun will occur during Ravi Yoga. Additionally, Mars will transition into Scorpio, creating Ruchak Raja Yoga, while Jupiter will be positioned in the Moon's sign, forming Hans Raja Yoga. Therefore, three Raja Yogas will be present today, making the offerings particularly significant.
Evening Arghya Time - 5:40 PM
Proper Method for Offering Arghya:
When offering arghya, face west (towards the setting sun). Fill a copper vessel with water, adding flowers, rice, roli, jaggery, and milk. Raise the pot with both hands and pour the water towards the sun, allowing it to fall gently so that the sun's rays reflect through the water, a practice known as Surya Darshan. While pouring, chant the mantra Om Adityaya Namah or Om Bhaskaraya Namah. After the offering, fold your hands and pray: Jai Chhathi Maiya, Jai Surya Bhagwan. May you bless me with happiness, health, and prosperity for my children.
