Understanding the Importance of Gopashtami
The Significance of Gopashtami
Gopashtami is referenced in the Padma Purana and the Bhagavata Purana, which narrate that Lord Krishna began his cow herding duties on the eighth day of the bright fortnight in Kartik. This festival is predominantly celebrated in Mathura, Vrindavan, and Braj, where cows and calves are revered as they hold a special place in Lord Krishna's heart.
In Braj, cows are bathed and decorated on this day. During Gopashtami, donations are made to cowsheds for their upkeep, and cows are fed jaggery and fodder as a gesture of respect and gratitude. This festival is celebrated annually on the eighth day of the bright fortnight of Kartik, marking the commencement of Lord Krishna's cow herding activities.
