Celebrating Dhanteras: Rituals and Significance
Understanding Dhanteras Rituals
Dhanteras Overview: Dhanteras, also referred to as Dhantrayodashi, marks the commencement of the five-day Diwali festivities. It is a tradition to purchase gold and silver on this day, which is deemed highly auspicious. However, if purchasing precious metals is not feasible, there are alternative items that are also considered lucky to acquire.
Throughout the year, various festivals are celebrated in India, with Dhanteras being one of the significant ones. This festival signifies the start of the Diwali celebrations. While buying gold and silver is a common practice, there are other items that can be purchased on Dhanteras that are also believed to bring good fortune.
Items to Buy on Dhanteras
Brass Utensils: Brass is associated with Lord Dhanvantari, and acquiring brass utensils on Dhanteras is thought to enhance health, prosperity, and wealth significantly.
Yellow Cowries: Cowries are linked to Goddess Lakshmi. It is recommended to buy cowries on Dhanteras, and if they are not already dyed, they should be colored with turmeric. After worshipping Goddess Lakshmi on Diwali night, these cowries should be stored in a safe to ensure a steady influx of wealth.
Gomati Chakra: Considered sacred, Gomati Chakras are believed to have miraculous properties. Purchasing 11 Gomati Chakras, wrapping them in red cloth, and placing them in a safe is said to alleviate financial troubles and enhance financial stability.
New Broom: Acquiring a new broom on Dhanteras is regarded as very auspicious. It symbolizes Goddess Lakshmi and is believed to sweep away poverty, inviting happiness and prosperity into the home. It is essential to worship the broom before bringing it into the house.
Coriander Seeds: Purchasing dried coriander seeds on Dhanteras and offering them to Goddess Lakshmi is considered a good omen. Coriander symbolizes wealth, and placing these seeds in a safe or at the Goddess's altar after the puja is thought to bring stability and prosperity.
