Dev Diwali Rituals

Dev Diwali Puja Vidhi:
On this day, after bathing, wear clean clothes and prepare the worship area. Begin by anointing Lord Shiva or the Shivalinga with Ganga water. Offer Akshat, sandalwood paste, flowers, garlands, Bel leaves, cannabis, Dhatura, Aak flowers, cow's milk, honey, fruits, naivedya, and incense. During this time, chant the Om Namah Shivaya mantra and recite the Shiva Chalisa. Listen to the story of Dev Diwali, which narrates how Lord Shiva vanquished Tripurasura, earning him the title of Lord Tripurari. Conclude the rituals by performing aarti with a lamp filled with cow ghee or camphor, and light an 8- or 12-faced lamp for Lord Shiva.


Lighting Lamps on Dev Diwali

On Dev Diwali, it is customary to light 5, 7, 11, 51, or 101 earthen lamps at home, filled with mustard or sesame oil.


Salutations to the Lamps

Salutations to the lamps:
If you have a Shami tree in your vicinity, light a lamp with sesame or mustard oil. Place two lamps at the main entrance and create a rangoli in your courtyard, placing a lamp on it. Additionally, light a lamp in your kitchen to receive the blessings of Goddess Annapurna. A lamp should also be lit near the Peepal tree outside your home, and you can light one for your ancestors as well. Ensure to place a lamp near the door of each room and, if possible, light a lamp at a nearby temple or river.
